In Nepal, like in European countries homeopathic doctors treat both children and grown-ups with diarrhoea and see good results with their treatments. In Nepal especially in summer, with heat and monsoon a lot of patients with diarrhoea visit our clinics, this also has to do with lack of proper sanitary and lack of good quality drinking water. Bishnu Bhakta Kawan presents 4 cases of diarrhoea well treated with homeopathy.

KOLA NITIDA for SLEEPLESSNESS by dr Rob Brik

Sun is rising
“Sun is rising, sun is rising”. The hotel-boy knocks on the door. It’s 5.30 in the morning, Nagarkot, Nepal. The sun is rising, a daily routine as it may seem, but here on a mountain ridge at the end of the Kathmandu-valley it offers a spectacular view, when the first sunbeams of the day colour the Himalayan giants in the east and set them in a golden glow. Yesterday, after morning clinic, I took off for a walk from Bhaktapur, one of the three king-cities in the Kathmandu-valley, where since 1995 the Bhaktapur International Homeopathic Clinic has been located. I went past rice fields on which farmers were working with their waterbuffalos, along small villages surrounded by Bamboo-bushes, where the wind rustles, up the mountain to reach Nagarkot.
Coming from Holland, a flat country mostly below sea-level, it is quite a change to go and work in Nepal. I reacted on an advertisement of the BIHC, in Links, searching for doctors to work at their project in Bhaktapur. After a long flight I was picked up at the airport by Ishor and brought to the Clinic at the centre of the old medieval city. My first time out of Europe, I must say it was quite a change. Sitting at Datatraya square looking at the temples, guarded by two huge stone sculptures, women were passing by dressed in the black and red saris the Newari women wear. Men with long bamboo poles on their shoulders at each end carrying a large burden. Groups of people bringing offerings to the Gods, accompanied by men playing tablas, harmonium, violins and flutes. Everywhere the smell of incense, at some places mixed with the scent of a not to good working sewer system.
The first days at Bhaktapur; the doctor you succeed shows you around. You meet the students, we teach in the weekends, the assistants working at the clinic, patients that come to the morning clinic and afternoon clinic. Some very ill patients you have to take over, we see them at home visits. I remember a young woman, dying from lung-cancer, we helped with phosphorus ,that stopped the bleeding with coughing and made her less frightened. Then on Saturday mornings we first went to see the children at Child Haven, where a Canadian organisation took care of an orphanage and we took care of the children and after that visit it is class, teaching the students.
After a few days the colleague went home and I was ”doctor in charge”. A lot of impressions in a short week, as a result of which I did not sleep so well.
Sleeplessness
I had difficulties falling asleep. My mind kept going over things I had seen during the days, things I had to do first in the next days, people I had met, patients I had seen, children I was treating, things I wanted to buy for my children and wife at home, stories I wanted to tell them. I felt very lively, very enthusiastic, I had seen many new things, smelt many new fragrances, heard a lot of new sounds and music. It felt a bit like being in a movie by Bertolucci, say the Last Emperor. I woke up early, my mind being awake right away. I was not disturbed by the sounds around my bedroom though. Dogs barking, musicians playing and singing in the next-door temple each evening till late. I loved it, I felt all right. I rose early in the morning, together with the farmers coming from the surrounding fields, selling their little crops under my bedroom window at the market, starting at six. I went out and sat on the cold square seeing the sun come up, watch the farmers, then went home for breakfast before morning clinic started at eight. Although I felt in good spirits and worked with great enthusiasm , I started getting a little tired after some days and nights in which I didn’t sleep well.
Kola nitida
Looking up sleeplessness in the Repertory I thought of nux-vomica, having some abdominal problems also, esp. diarrhoea, but the sleeplessness didn’t react and the diarrhoea went well on sulphur. Then I tried coffea, although I was not troubled by the noises around me. I also tried phosphorus, being filled up with impressions, like a sleepless child on his first week at school. But none of these remedies did any good. Then I remembered a proofing done by Bernd Schuster, a German homeopath, of the cola-nut, the homeopathic remedy kola nitida.
The Cola tree grows in Africa esp. Ghana, the nuts are chewed as a stimulant to endure physical exertions for instance, by people travelling through the deserts. It belongs to the order of Malvales , to the family of sterculiaceae, together with the cocoa tree. Both cocoa and cola contain a high level of theobromine and caffeine.
What I remembered of the proofing was the restlessness, the sleeplessness, together with the feeling of being high spirited. People tell they are full of energy and power, eager to start working, very enthusiastic, receptive to impressions. So I tried kola nitida in a 30K and it did very well.
Kola nitida belongs to the order of Malvales. Is his book an Insight into plants, volume III, Rajan Sankaran tells about the theme of the Malvales the sensation to be attached and then detached, Joined and then separated, Together and then separated. It was exactly my situation being a stranger in Nepal, joining another group of people, working together with them, being separated from my loved ones, acting communicative but feeling estranged too.
On a seminar in Utrecht, Anton Kramer tells about the Malvales, they are worse after showing their emotions. They are people that want to be in contact with their surroundings, addressing kola nitida the problems are especially related with the speech, they may become nervous and hold back their speech, or they become vivid, mirthful and affectionate. He mentions the burst of energy, the hectic working, the feeling you can go on for hours. Then in cocoa, the homeopathic picture of chocolate, there can be a feeling of isolation a forsaken feeling. Again I think it fitted a lot to my situation as homeopathic doctor working abroad. Being enthusiastic, working hard, using my speech a lot. I remember talking in English all the time, I even dreamt in English. Wanting to be in contact with my surroundings, the patients, the students, trying to understand them to be able to offer good medical attention.
Patient cases
After this experience I have been giving kola nitida to patients of mine, with sleeping problems esp. coming from being busy and strikingly esp. when they were busy moving their house(holds).
One woman, a 52 years old secretary of a great firm that was to move to another building, was responsible for this operation, taking care of everything and everybody, seeing to it that everyone felt at home at their new working place, she was very enthusiastic about it all, but it took more then 70 hours of work a week for some weeks and in the end she felt completely worn out, but could not fall asleep, still thinking about what to do. Even after the whole operation was successful and over she couldn’t sleep well and didn’t recover. What I found striking in her story was her enthusiasm about her work, she didn’t want to stay at home. She reacted well on kola nitida 200K, went back to a healthy sleep and recovered.
Another woman, 54 years old was moving with her husband to a new house. They had to do a lot of arranging things and though she liked it all very much and was again very enthusiastic about the new house they were going to, she could not fall asleep. She also did well on kola nitida 200K
Kola nitida
In Africa people chewed the cola nuts when they had to travel long distances through the deserts, being on the move, going to strange places, getting a lot of new impressions, they had to endure, they were estranged and detached from their homes. They were dependent on themselves and had to contact new people. Moving, enthusiastic, liking to work, but not sleeping very well, this is the picture I ‘ve seen kola nitida work on very well.

ACONITUM in a case of TYPHOID FEVER by BALA RAM KISI and dr ROB BRIK
Aconitum in a case of Typhoid fever by Bala Ram Kisi and dr Rob Brik
I sit at the back of the motor of Bala Ram when we leave the city of Bhaktapur and drive out into the fields, where his family has a chicken farm. Bala Ram a student of the BIHC, treats the farmers from the surrounding villages with homeopathy.
This morning a young woman of 29 years old comes to his place. She is married, has 3 daughters and runs a small farm together with her husband. What they earn from their fields is hardly enough to provide the family with food
Nearly a week ago her husband got ill; Soreness of whole body, severe headache, profound weakness, dryness of mouth, body very painful so he could hardly move. He was given Bryonia C-200 by Bala Ram on which he slightly improved. Then his brother took him to the hospital where they diagnosed Typhoid fever and he was treated with antibiotics. In hospital his wife had to take care of him. After 5 days he could leave the hospital.
Then his wife got sick. She suffered from almost exactly the same symptoms; soreness of whole body, headache, fever 102F(=39.5C), chest pain, sore throat, accelerated respiration and profound weakness. When we see her she tells to be very restless and a bit fearful. We notice her perspiring on the upper lip. She has a dry mouth, with a bitter taste.
After repertorisation we choose Aconitum C-30. That same evening she is feeling better already. She gets a dose of aconitum each day ans improves quickly. In two days she is back at regular work again. With homeopathy we saved her a lot of money for hospital treatment.
Typhoid fever
Typhoid or enteric fever is caused by the Salmonella Typhi an enterobacteria, mostly transmitted by contaminated water sometimes food. It starts gradually, and goes on for about 14 days in which the temperature rises to 39.5-40C. People can become really sick, with headache, malaise, abdominal pain, prostration, joint pains and diarrhoea (esp. in young children) . From the 16 million cases of typhoid fever annually about 600,000 die.In his World Travellers Manual of Homeopathy dr Colin B Lessel suggests the following remedies ;Acid-mur,Bapt,Bell,Chin-o,Gels,Ip and Nux-v.
